What do I do in the Classroom?Because the 7th grade math uses flipped classroom, I usually help students with homework and worksheet assignments. Almost weekly I take a group of students into the hallway because they are slower learners and need more one-on-one instruction. Because the TEKS have changed this year, these students are having to learn 7th and 8th grade math, so the topics are very fast paced and the students need to ask a lot of questions, as well as, having one-on-one instruction. So I am enjoying spending time with the students that need more instruction on the topics. I have the privilege to witness a "light bulb" on nearly a daily bases. Also, Lexy has been observed many times this year, so I have been able to help her with lesson planning and creating real life activities to pair with the lesson being taught.

Some Activities I have Done in the Classroom:I have done several lessons and activities this year. The first one I did was a Converting Lesson where the students learned how to convert measurements between the meteoric and customary systems. I used the strategy of visual math to teach the lesson, so the students had an opportunity to discover conversion factors before learning the math necessary to convert.
The next lesson I did, was an interest lesson. After student watched their video notes the night before, we tested their knowledge using paper slides. Each slide had specific information that had to be included and the students solved and explained an investment problem assigned to them. They loved using paper slides and iPads, so they defiantly enhanced their learning.

Another activity I just recently did was a Christmas tree decorating game. It makes any worksheet a competition. The students are split into 7 different groups and each group has a different color of Christmas ornament. Once the group gets a question correct, they get to put an ornament on the Christmas tree. The competition is complete when a group has all their ornaments on the tree.

I have an inclusion, block class, which means that I have the same students for two class periods back to back. The students in my class are very bright, but are a little bit slower than other students, so that is why they are all in the same class for two class periods. They participate in flipped classroom- students watch video notes for homework and then do worksheets in class. This way, students are able to have direct help with assignment questions.
In my class, we usually play a game or do a class activity for the first period to give the students a fun practice before the second period when they work on their assignments. I go around and help students one-on-one and sometimes we split the class up and we go over worksheets in groups.

My 3-D Shapes and Nets Lesson
Each student had a Google Chromebook on their desk and went to this website and they got to explore the figures and nets by themselves before I began to go over the lesson. I then walked students through the website and used visual manipulative to help students understand nets. I thought this was the best way for them to learn because they can physically do it (kinesthetic), they can see me making the shapes (visual), and they could hear me talk about the shapes and nets (auditory).

Click here to view my blog to find out information on my first day going into the classroom. It will give details about my teacher, my grade level, how I was feeling, and what I was doing.

A Normal Day at the Site School

  • Arrive at the beginning of math workshop (math stations)

  • I'm usually teaching and guiding 1 group through a station
  • Then it is recess
  • If it is inside recess, then usually I will pull 1 child aside at a time, and have that child read their book in their folder to me and I assess if they could read fluently, or if they needed to remain on that reading level.
  • If it is outside recess, they I go outside with them and sometimes play tag with the kids
  • Next is rotations
  • During computer, I pass out their password cards, so they can log into their reading program and assist children having trouble with their computer
  • Then I lead the students to music class
  • In music I help the kids learn songs and dances when they are taught and help the kids stay quiet on performance day
  • In P.E. I watch the kids to make sure they are playing fair, being kid, and following directions

My Math Station

The week before Thanksgiving break, I made a Math Turkey for one of the stations. I explained to the class how to play on Tuesday and on Wednesday I got to guide a group through the station. The kids enjoyed pulling a feather, identifying the number, and finding the corresponding amount on their game board. They were engaged the whole time. I would ask them what number had the most, what number had the least, and how many more of a certain number did they need until the row was filled. After all the feathers were pulled, they told me (if it was a race) which number got first, second, third, and so on. Afterwards, I knew they loved it when the kids told me that they wished they had this game at their house. That alone made all the time in preparation worth it.

The Day at the Pumpkin Patch

On Halloween, I got to go on a field trip to the pumpkin patch with my kindergarten class. I was in charge of 3 kid while we were there. We got to go on a hay ride, walk through all the pumpkins, and go through the corn maze. The whole experience was great because it was at the beginning of the internship, so I got to know the kids better. Below are 2 pictures from the field trip.
